Overview
The Honorable Stuart Peim (Ret.) joined the firm as of counsel in 2020 after spending 19 years as Superior Court Judge in Union County Superior Court, of which 16 years he served in the Criminal Division, and three years he served in Juvenile Court.
Drawing on his extensive experience as a Judge in the Criminal Division, Judge Peim assists pro bono clients in criminal matters through the Stein Public Interest Center, including providing advice to organizations appearing as amicus curiae and assisting organizations and individuals as direct counsel. He also consults on matters in the firm’s Criminal Defense and Investigations practices.
Judge Peim’s pro bono practice also includes providing advice to organizations in connection with criminal matters in immigration cases, as well as representing detained clients in removal and asylum immigration cases in federal courts (including both the District Court and Court of Appeals), involving violations of constitutional rights, as well as of other laws, rules and regulations.
After retiring from the bench in 2018, Judge Peim represented pro bono clients through Legal Services of New Jersey. He began his legal career clerking for the Honorable Edward N. Cahn, in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and for the Honorable Francis Van Dusen, in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Judge Peim served as both Deputy Chief and Chief of the Criminal Division of the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey. Prior to becoming a Superior Court Judge, he was a partner at a New Jersey law firm.
