Justice Gary S. Stein Quoted in Article on School Segregation Lawsuit

Pashman Stein Walder Hayden Justice Gary S. Stein quoted in the Philly Inquirer, “N.J. school segregation lawsuit inches toward trial after negotiations stall.” The article explains a New Jersey school segregation lawsuit is approaching a trial after negotiations continue to stall.

“The reality is, we were looking for the state to be more responsive to the entire issue of segregation,” said Gary Stein, a former New Jersey Supreme Court justice, who is chairman of the coalition that brought the litigation.

“We didn’t feel that the state was responding with a sufficient degree of participation to make discussions worthwhile,” Stein said.

He acknowledged that the remedies sought in the suit, including changing the ways students are assigned to schools, would be “politically difficult for any administration.”
