The Hon. Edwin H. Stern (Ret.), Special Counsel at Pashman Stein Walder Hayden P.C., was recently quoted in a Law360 article titled, “Proposal To Pick NJ Appeals Judges Ripped As 'Terrible Idea.’” The article discusses a proposal to move the power to appoint state appeals court judges from the chief justice to the state Senate and the governor's office. This proposal was met with harsh criticism from legal voices across New Jersey, including state Supreme Court Chief Justice Stuart Rabner and the New Jersey State Bar Association.

Edwin Stern, a retired judge with 30 years of experience, including seven years as presiding judge for administration for the Appellate Division, told Law360 Pulse that although he has high regard for the state Senate judiciary committee, the procedure for naming new Appellate Division judges is better left alone.

He said studies have shown that appellate judges with trial court experience make for better jurists than those without that experience.

"There is a reason this constitutional provision exists," Stern said.
