Stuart Peim

Of Counsel

Background

The Honorable Stuart Peim (Ret.) joined the firm as Of Counsel in 2020 after spending 19 years as Superior Court Judge in Union County Superior Court, of which 16 years he served in the Criminal Division, and three years he served in Juvenile Court. Judge Peim will assist pro bono clients through the Justice Gary S. Stein Public Interest Center at Pashman Stein Walder Hayden.

Through the Stein Public Interest Center, Judge Peim will focus his pro bono practice primarily on representing detained clients in removal and asylum immigration cases in federal courts, including both the District Court and Court of Appeals, involving violations of constitutional rights, as well as of other laws, rules and regulations. Drawing on his extensive experience as a Judge in the Criminal Division, Judge Peim will also assist pro bono clients in criminal matters through the Stein Public Interest Center and consult on matters in the firm’s Criminal Defense and Governmental and Internal Investigations practice.

After retiring from the bench in 2018, Judge Peim represented pro bono clients through Legal Services of New Jersey. He began his legal career clerking for the Honorable Edward N. Cahn, in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and for the Honorable Francis Van Dusen, in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Judge Peim served as both Deputy Chief and Chief of the Criminal Division of the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey. Prior to becoming a Superior Court Judge, he was a partner at a New Jersey law firm.
